We Are All Grazing Limpets : Action Pyramid [PAST]

A quadraphonic response to new sonic material gathered on a recent recording trip to the Outer Hebrides, with experiments in extending the multichannel format using mobile devices as additional sound making objects. The work features numerous underwater recordings from the Isle of Harris centering on the steady rhythmic scraping from Limpets grazing the rock pools and shorelines on the craggy east coast. Please bring a smartphone if you would like to add to the piece when you visit.

Tom Fisher is a sound artist and musician based in the marshy edge-lands of North East London. Working primarily under the name Action Pyramid his projects vary from site-specific sound installation and headphone based works for galleries and museums, to experimental radio works and compositions.

Douglas Benford plays various idiosyncratic instruments, objects and toys accompanying a soundscape created from household debris, objects and including autotuned vocal snippets. Spacious audio collisions of the human and the found, and the discarded.

Douglas Benford, composer and sound artist, has been involved in various audio genres and monikers since the late 1980s, performing at institutions in the UK (Bristol’s Arnolfini, London’s Science Museum, Tate Modern, The Roundhouse, ICA and Glasgow’s CCA, The Vortex), festivals worldwide (Mutek, Synch, Transmediale) and has had installation work in numerous UK galleries (London, Swansea, Stroud and Essex). His pieces and performances have been aired on the radio internationally, and regularly on BBC Radio 3’s Freeness programme and on Resonance FM.

S☉N OF THE SUN : Mark Wagner + Blanc Sceol [PAST]

Mark Wagner presents S☉N OF THE SUN a ritual-performance based on Hermeticism and the Great Work of Alchemy, featuring live electronica.

This is the second time Wagner performs at Project DIVFUSE. His debut performance at the space, 33Hz Sonic Orgasm, brought new connections between sound and body.

Playing in the open yard on the same evening is Blanc Sceol, (artists Stephen Shiell and Hannah White). They will perform with voice, fujara and bells.

‘We’re all going to die, is it ok? A lament for the body, a cyclical sinking into earth and stone, and becoming again in wood and air.’

In the tower room of church Sankt Michael Cologne, two small loudspeakers are suspended from the 12-meter-high bell tower with thin wires.

Connected through the network, two members of [ _ _ _ ], Li Song and Jia Liu perform live from London and Karlsruhe respectively. The sound reaches the site through the loudspeakers and is listened to and recorded by Shuoxin Tan, the third performer and the only person on-site. The audience is only able to hear through Shuoxin, as she moves through the room with a binaural microphone in an auditory choreography and interplays with the small loudspeakers. Song and Jia observe her spatial movements and react to them with their live-coded sound patterns. In this site-specific performance, the loudspeakers are not only senders of sound but also the receiver of the entire space. Because of the instability of the installation and the characteristics of the tower room, unperceivable signals existing in the space will be picked up and become part of the result.

Each individual involved in this event becomes “Der dritte Körper” – the 3 performers on-site and remote, the sound installation and the noise in the space, as well as the attentively listening ears of the audience and the spaces they are in. The small tower room turns into a micro-cosmos of sound, during this 20 minutes of the performance.

IN THE BE-GIN-NING WAS THE WORD howled the machine.

‘This is a lie,’ said the man.

In Marcel Schwob’s 1892 short story The Talking Machine a man trades his voice for the power to shape reality. In their new performance piece, made especially for Project DIVFUSE, storyteller Laura Sampson and sound artist Sam Enthoven will use Schwob’s classic weird tale as a starting point from which to explore the implications of creation stories from around the world. Reality is a consensus. That consensus can be manipulated with narrative – histories, justifications, conspiracy theories and ‘culture wars’. Stories have power. Perhaps the idea that words and voices can create reality is not so far-fetched after all?

This piece of work is one of the 5 pieces that are selected from DIVFUSE Sound Archive No. 2 – an Open Call for work that are based on field recordings.

‘Llantysilio’ explores the soundscape around the small church at Llantysilio, a community near Llangollen in North Wales. The church stands by a weir where water from the River Dee is diverted into the Llangollen Canal, which passes through the town towards the Pontcysyllte Aquaduct, a World Heritage site built by Thomas Telford from local iron. This part of north-east Wales, close to the English border, is a confluence of historical forces and natural features. The Dee, the canal, Telford’s Holyhead Road, the railway to the coast (torn up under Beeching), pass in close proximity to each other. The church at Llantysilio stands at the headwaters of this historical logistical network, but the church and its yard are quiet places of contemplation. This composition, based on field recordings at the site, uses percussive plucking of an acoustic guitar within the church and ambient sound from the churchyard to evoke the echoes of industrial history that reverberate within the Dee valley.
